TANDERS MAKE RACING HISTORY

TANDERS MAKE RACING HISTORY

For the first time in Australian history, husband and wife racing drivers are leading Australia’s premier motor racing categories.

While Toll HSV Dealer Team’s Garth Tander is atop the V8 Supercar Championship points table, wife Leanne Tander has taken the lead in Australia’s major open-wheeler formula, the Australian F3 Championship for the CAMS Gold Star.

Leanne’s solid performance in Round 7 of the F3 championship in Tasmania at the weekend propelled her to a four-point lead over rival Tim Macrow, 176 to 172, with one round to go.

It is the first time a woman has led the battle for the prestigious Gold Star. Earlier this season, Leanne became the first woman to win a race in the Gold Star series.

To make it even sweeter, Leanne’s TanderSport Dallara Spiess Opel is prepared by husband Garth, who was trackside at Symmons Plains to see his wife hit the title points lead by running second to Sydney driver Barton Mawer, who is not a championship challenger.

In V8s, Garth took the V8 Supercar Series lead from his Toll HSV team-mate Rick Kelly with a three-race clean sweep at the Queensland Round of the V8 Series in July.

He will go into the first of the big endurance races, the Just Insurance 500, at Sandown next week with a six-point advantage over Kelly.

Their team has yet to announce whether Tander and Kelly will be paired for Sandown – the first of this year’s endurance double – or split to race with the team’s enduro recruits, Paul Radisich and Craig Baird.

Tander said he was thrilled that Leanne had hit the lead in the F3 championship.

“A couple of things didn’t go our way during the weekend, but to come out with the championship lead is excellent,” he said.

Leanne, who was named in leading British magazine AutoSport as one of the female stars of the future recently, said she had not pushed as hard as she might when running second to Mawer because she had the championship position in mind.

“I probably had the speed to get past him, but it would have been silly to risk the championship,” she said. “We went there to close the gap, and we are pleased to have done it.”

While it is the first time the Melbourne-based Tanders have led the V8 and F3 series, it is not the first time they have been championship leaders at the same time.

In 2000, when Garth was leading the V8 series, Leanne was leading the Australian Formula Ford Championship - the same series that Garth won in the 1990s.

While Leanne will be in the pits to watch husband Garth’s tilt at glory at Sandown on Sunday week, he won’t be able to reciprocate when Leanne races in the F3 decider at Oran Park on November 3-4 – Garth will be racing in Bahrain in Round 12 of the V8 Series that weekend.
